What is the UAEA?

The University Area Enrichment Association (UAEA) is a civic organization that assists community members to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods surrounding The Ohio State University. This is a community comprised of college students, families, young professionals, and retired folks of all ages, races, economic backgrounds, and religions.

An important component of the mission of the UAEA is to empower those who live, work, worship, and attend school in the University Area. We love this community; because of its strengths and its possibilities!

Some of our current projects include:
          • Pedal Instead
          • Community Gardening
          • Juvenile Restitution
          • Murals/Public Art
          • Women’s Civic Leadership Group

          • Farmers’ Market
          • Litter & Graffiti Abatement

More information about these projects will be available on the newly designed website, to be launched in the near future. To read more on our Vision Statement, Mission, Values, and Goals, Click Here

Recent Accomplishments:

The Enrichment Association has begun construction on our pop-bottle greenhouse! With the help of over 200 volunteers The Enrichment Association was able to make MLK day a productive and community focused day of service. As over 200 students, neighbors and city wide participants arrived at the Summit on 16th United Methodist church Monday morning, we knew we were in for a day of positive outreach. Everyone who came out was able to help spread the word about
The Enrichment Association, cook and serve chilli, clean chairs for the church an  begin construction of the greenhouse that will house the area community garden seedlings this Spring.

With about 250 2-litters we were able to build a couple walls of our 2-litter greenhouse. We served about 150 folks from the neighborhood home-made vegan and regular chilli with products that all can be grown in our greenhouse with the exception of the beef (cows are too big for greenhouses). Students and community members that partook in the days activities all worked hard to complete the projects at hand. The bulk of volunteers went canvassing door to door to invite individuals in the community to come into the building to eat and to explore our projects. We advocated for the new computer lab by passing out a pamphlet with lab hours and our contact information to those who were interested. Some of the volunteers told us that many neighbors were extremely excited to have the chance to go use the internet somewhere else besides the library. A few people from the Weinland Park part of the neighborhood offered to help out with future projects including the construction of the greenhouse as soon as they saw how diverse men and women were working together to support the community gardens.

Over all, we all had an amazing day that allowed us to feel inclusive and thankful for the
spirit of collaboration and community empowerment. New and seasoned volunteers committed their time and service to our neighborhood. We are still collecting 2-litters in order to finish our greenhouse. Another work day is planned for February 20th. If you or any organization that you work with is willing to collect 2-litter bottles, please contact  Christine Annarino at christine.annarino@gmail.com.

"I attended a workshop on creating my own noodles and pasta sauce at UAEA, and it was great! I am not an experienced cook, but I have always wanted to learn how to make more food from scratch. Our instructor had all the supplies ready to go when we got there, and took us through the process step by step in their kitchen. We all worked together to make the noodles and sauce, and UAEA provided drinks and flatware so we could enjoy it when it was done. It was a lot of fun to hang out with people from my community and end the night with a delicious meal. Our instructor was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun to work with as well. The best part is that it was very affordable- only 5$ for everything! If UAEA is doing a workshop on anything you're interested in, I'd recommend it."

Thank you to all who joined us in Beginning Knitting and Noodle Making workshops this past week. The Enrichment Association will soon announce new and upcoming workshops. Each workshop is inexpensive,  taught by a volunteer, and include fun projects for those of all ages!
